Google's new goto URLs implications for SERP parsing and SEO tools

  • I recently came across Google's google.com/goto URL structure appearing in Search results.

Instead of a search result pointing directly to:

    https://example.com/page

the link may now route through:

    https://www.google.com/goto?url=...

The final destination remains the same, but an intermediary routing layer is introduced. This is particularly interesting from a technical perspective because systems that parse Google Search results may no longer be able to identify the destination URL directly from the result markup.

    This could affect:

    • SERP scraping
    • Rank-tracking systems
    • SERP APIs
    • Competitor monitoring
    • Automated SEO reporting
    • Search-data collection

For normal website owners, there doesn't appear to be a reason to change canonical tags, XML sitemaps, internal links, or existing redirects because of this.

I put together a detailed breakdown here:

Learn what Google goto URLs are, why Google uses google.com/goto, how they work, and what they mean for SEO, rankings, analytics, and GEO.

I'm interested to know how others are handling google.com/goto when processing Google Search results programmatically.
